Here is the Panorama@Work team that has been assisting with neighborhood clean-ups over the past weekend and again this weekend.

The volume of work is enormous, and at times it truly feels as though we are barely making a dent, especially with grass cutting, which we try to carry out once a month.

Last weekend we began grass cutting along Rhinoceros Road and Hendrik Potgieter, particularly at the turn-off from Hendrik Potgieter into Rhinoceros Road, where the long grass makes it difficult to see oncoming vehicles. From there, we moved on to Albert Street near Adamson Crescent, an area where residents unfortunately do not maintain the space behind their properties. We also attended to grass cutting along Cornelius Street near Spark School, where we face similar challenges with unmaintained verges. Thereafter, we worked in Lemoendoring and Sewetjie, both high-risk streets due to excessive grass growth, and finished off at the Protea koppie, where additional grass cutting was done.

Today, the team returned to Rhinoceros Road to continue the clean-up. The photos clearly show just how severe the situation currently is. A team of six managed to clear only a small section, as the overgrowth, particularly on the traffic islands at the intersection, is extensive.

We will need to deploy our team there again during the next cycle to continue work at this intersection.

All of this is made possible through our residents’ annual subscription of R270 per year. Renewals are now open, and we strongly encourage new residents to sign up so we can continue building a stronger, cleaner, and safer community together.

Over the past few months, we’ve been in discussions with the Honeydew Community Police Forum – CPF about supporting some much-needed upgrades at the Honeydew SAPS.

After several visits to the station, it became clear that one of the area’s most in need of improvement was the seating in the Customer Service Centre, where many residents wait to report cases or seek assistance.

Recognizing the impact this has on our own community, the Panorama Residents Association decided to get involved.

We have replaced the old, worn-out seating in the waiting area with three new, durable benches, providing space for up to nine people. In addition, we’ve purchased 10 single chairs to be used by residents while filing complaints or receiving assistance at the desks.

This contribution is not only a gesture of support to our fellow residents but also to the dedicated officers at Honeydew SAPS who work in this space every day.

Panorama Residents Association’s (PRA) Panorama@Work team took on the task of clearing a once popular family park on July 30. The Excell Park that runs from the Weltevreden Methodist Church on Noupit Avenue all the way up Bergkaree Avenue to Kuils Avenue was the site of a mass clean-up and invasive plant species removal project. Treefelling ZA provided some of the heavy machinery and expertise while EC Security and Beagle Watch Security added their resources.

The chainsaws and weed-hackers arrived on site just after 07:00 and within a few hours had amassed a small mountain of invasive plant life. The areas either side of the river as it snakes through the park had become wildly overgrown, creating a dense jungle that has been used as a shelter for displaced people and posed a possible security threat for residents in the suburb.

After cutting away the invasive plant species, a blue water-soluble, paint-on herbicide known as Kaput was applied. The herbicide is made up of Picloram and Triclopyr, which are selective herbicides used to control broad-leaved weeds and once coated on, prevents the regrowth of the chopped stems. Along with the unwanted plants, several refuse bags worth of litter and alcohol bottles were cleared away by active residents.

PRA has stressed the need to make the park welcoming to families and community members who once utilised the benches and playground apparatus in the scenic park. Their aim will be to have each green belt and park within the residents association’s boundaries cared for.

Clearing the tall broad-leaved invasive species allows for added security and creates a presentable space that welcomes residents.

Members of the Panorama@Work team have been busy with protective maintenance throughout June and early July. With the dangers of controlled fires and spontaneous veld fires ever-present during winter, creating firebreaks between homes and critical infrastructure is paramount. Using Panorama Residents Association (PRA) funds to employ local labourers, several hundred metres of boundary bush have been trimmed.

PRA covers a large section of Weltevreden Park, roughly triangulated between Hendrik Potgieter, Jim Fouché and JG Strydom Roads, as well as bordering streets. From June 11, the machete and weed-whacker-armed men began their work along the greenbelt running from the bottom of Windsurf Street toward 9th Avenue where they cut a five-metre fire break for houses bordering the field.

To ease any unnecessary anxiety around electrical infrastructure, the Panorama@Work team were again busy on July 2. The bushes in the field along Theunis Street near the Panorama substation had begun to creep closer to the top of the wall, and mid-Saturday a clear gap had been created. The results are twofold, as PRA committee member Michael Steyn explained. “Not only does this keep the fire away from properties but it also helps to see what is going on on the other side of the walls.”

On Tuesday evening, January 25 the Panorama Residents Association (PRA) held their annual general meeting (AGM) at Panorama Primary School. All PRA members were notified through Sector Groups on WhatsApp and the Northsider 30 days prior. The meeting commenced at 19:00, and PRA chairman Dave Baxter explained that the PRA started 25 years ago and was revived by Jon Rosenberg in 2016. In his chairman’s report, Dave told the members that in January 2021 the PRA had 448 households and the current number is at 505, indicating a 13% growth. The chairman also expressed the PRA’s gratitude to two committee members who sadly had passed away, thanking them for their contribution. The meeting heard that the PRA’s activities have resulted in significantly decreased crime stats during December 2021, a traditionally busy period crime-wise, as only one attempted household burglary was reported in the area.
